About the project

The FASHION FOR FOKUS project is organized by Fokus Praha, a non-profit organization that helps people with severe mental illness. Its motto, “A Focus on Individuality”, connects the themes of fashion and mental health. Just as there are people whose behaviour does not fit the mainstream, who may be regarded crazy and, like the mentally ill, are often excluded from the society, also artists and pioneers in the field of fashion tend to be considered eccentric and extravagant.

The principal objective of the project is to raise funds for the activities of Fokus Praha and to build a tradition of charity events where the world of art and fashion meets the mission to help. We cooperate with young and distinctive Czech designers and artists who dedicated their talent and time to the service of charity.

Simona Babčáková

It is not always easy to handle your being different and perceive your originality.

She can be seen in films directed by Jan Hřebejk, she appeared in the film “In the Shadow” by David Ondříček and she was a student of Jaroslav Dušek. We are talking about no one else than Simona Babčáková, who decided to endorse the FASHION FOR FOKUS project. And we had the opportunity to ask her a few questions. read more >

1. Why have you decided to support the FASHION FOR FOKUS project?

Because our society places great emphasis on continuous top notch performance and does not forgive failure. But who can handle everything perfectly without any mental glitches? I feel that we do not want to see the mentally ill because we are afraid that we ourselves might snap one day under the endless pressure. Yet it is considered perfectly acceptable today to see therapists of all kinds, so there really is nothing to be ashamed of. I personally see the benefit of all types of kinesiology, family constellations, principles of life and various other workshops which I took part in and which I continue to take part in on my way towards self-understanding and healing of the soul. And I understand those who are not able to handle the high demands imposed on them according to the accepted standards.

2. It is very easy to remember you in all your film roles, but how do you personally understand the term “individuality”?

Originality. The fact that one stands up for who he or she is, with all the talents and weaknesses. It sounds like a cliché, but it is not always easy to handle your being different and perceive it as being original.

3. We know that you also support other charity events and organizations…Do the Czechs get involved as much as people in other countries?

I do not have any statistics at hand, so I do not have an idea about the situation in other countries. I personally find the spirit of loyalty and solidarity lacking in the Czech Republic. I strongly feel that we like to just mind our own business. But perhaps I would be pleasantly surprised if I saw some kind of statistics. What bothers me, however, is the lack of support for non-profit organizations from the state administration.

4. Do you follow young Czech designers?

I do not follow their work in detail and I am bad at remembering names, but I regularly visit the Designblok and Design Market. And from time to time I read an interview with some young designers and I always enjoy it. I like their hard work and their confidence in being able to make their dream come true. So I am definitely a big fan of young designers.

5. How would you define your personal style?

This is one of the questions I dread the most. I dress according to the situation and my mood and I do not think I have a clearly defined style. This is probably more a question for the very sweet fashion police who have a much better idea of what suits me best and what I should or should not wear. I appreciate beauty and beautiful things and I like many different things. Especially costume jewellery.
