About the project

The FASHION FOR FOKUS project is organized by Fokus Praha, a non-profit organization that helps people with severe mental illness. Its motto, “Focus on Uniqueness”, connects the themes of fashion and mental health. People whose behavior stands out from the mainstream are often labeled crazy, yet in a very similar way, artists and designers experimenting in the field of fashion tend to be regarded as mad or extravagant.

The main objective of the project is to raise funds for the activities of Fokus Praha and to build on the success of last year’s first charity event, founded to create a platform where the world of art and fashion meets the mission to help. We cooperate with young and unique Czech designers and artists who dedicated their talent and time to the service of charity.

Helping is like breathing, like eating…

She was born and studied in Slovakia, where her family still lives. However, her nationality is Hungarian, after her parents, and she currently lives in Budapest. The star of Czech films, beautiful and unique actress Vica Kerekes, famous especially for her roles in the films Muži v naději, 7 dní hříchu, Dešťová víla, Křídla Vánoc and in the series Clona, agreed to become the face of this year’s Fashion for Fokus show. We spoke with about more than fashion over breakfast in a café in Dejvice. číst více >

Do you enjoy fashion?

I try to keep a healthy view of fashion, in order not to get completely engulfed. I do believe that it is quite easy to lose control, you want to be in all the time, you constantly leaf through the magazines… you become addicted. I want to make sure that the fashion is sending a clearly defined message of who I AM. Simply put, I do not want it to be about the fact that I am wearing a particular fashion designer’s clothes. I want to keep a healthy balance both in life, and in fashion. What’s more, if I am going to a premiere, I prefer to wear clothes by a young fashion designer rather than a very famous brand. I like it better if I know the designer personally, knowing that my clothes were created by Esther, I think of her personality every time I look at her design, and that is what I enjoy.

What inspires you when choosing clothes?

I went through various phases in my life. I was searching, trying, experimenting. It is probably natural that we all develop, we are on a journey, we are being formed. So I guess it is quite normal that I went through different stages in terms of fashion and I think that now I have found what I AM.

You live in Hungary, you come from Slovakia, you also work in the Czech Republic. Do you perceive any difference in the way people dress in these countries?

I do not see any big difference in people’s style in these countries. Maybe in Hungary they are more extreme, bolder, colorful. They are simply more daring in fashion.

The motto of the fashion show is “Focus on Uniqueness”. How do you feel about uniqueness – originality? Do you like extravagant, “crazy” clothes?

No, I must say I do not. But I enjoy seeing somebody wearing such clothes if they match his or her personality. If it is a person who can hold up to it, so to say, then I like it, I accept it, I perceive it as something positive… I would like to wear such clothes too, but I probably would not feel quite comfortable.

Fokus supports people who have experience with mental illness. Do you feel any personal connection with these people? Is there anyone among the people around you who had such experience?

Yes, I know a person who goes through such special phases. Sometimes that person is perfectly fine, but sometimes they get into a state where they need support, help and certain oversight. I think there are many people who experience this, they fight with themselves, their moods, but at the same time they are positive and even help others.

Fashion for Fokus is a charity event organized to support Fokus Praha. How do you feel about charity?

Helping is like breathing, like eating… We should not be asking ourselves in our lives whether to help or not… It is such a natural thing. We live in strange times. Unlike the past, we do not have to do much physical work anymore, we do not fight using our bodies but, more and more often, we strain our minds. That leads to mental illnesses, a hurt soul. But today, there are many ways in which we can help each other. One of those ways is through foundations and assisting organizations that facilitate the help.

You yourself give an impression of a very positive and balanced person. How do you achieve that?

I try to strike balance with myself. Same as everyone, I need to vent the accumulated stress and negative emotions from time to time. I look for a way, for challenges, I try to overcome my fears… Just a few days ago I have outdone myself and overcame my fear, I dared to sing in the public. That is my therapy.
